Mr. McHugh is a managing director with McKinnis Consulting Services and was a founder of the firm in 2009. In his role as managing director, he is responsible for setting the overall strategic vision of the firm and overseeing firm operations. In addition, Mr. McHugh has overall responsibility for client relationship management and ensuring project delivery quality.

Over the course of his career, Mr. McHugh has led numerous client engagements focused on leveraging next-generation EHR technology to support best-practice revenue cycle operations at academic medical centers, multi-facility health systems, and community hospitals.  Previous engagements have focused on EHR system implementation, optimization of patient access processes, and redesigning processes over all facets of the revenue cycle. In addition, James has served as an interim revenue cycle leader.

Prior to founding McKinnis Consulting Services, Mr. McHugh led revenue cycle engagements at leading healthcare consulting firms. James received his BBA in finance and economics from Loyola University Chicago, and his MBA in healthcare administration at the University of Colorado.  James is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the First Illinois Chapter of HFMA.  He has been a featured speaker on go-live risk mitigation at Epic’s UGM conference and has presented on best-practice patient access strategies at regional HFMA conferences.  James currently resides in Chicago with his family where he remains active in the community.
